Life and love in a Lancashire mill-town
When Captain Merridene dies, his daughters Martha and Penelope are left penniless. They take an unusual job offer – as teachers in the distant town of Tapton, working for mill owner Jonas Wright. They are charged with educating not only Jonas’s four young daughters, but also the more promising mill workers.
But soon they realise life in Tapton will be more complicated than they had bargained for. Caught up in a riot, Penelope meets a disgruntled worker, Clem Porter, whose family have been brought to starvation by a rival mill owner. Meanwhile, Martha is drawn – against her better judgement – to Ben Seaton, the father of one of her students. And just why is Ben quite so attracted to such a seemingly stern woman…?
The sisters must face hardships and challenges in their new lives, but will they also find love?
This unmissable saga from bestseller Anna Jacobs is perfect for fans of Annie Murray, Margaret Dickinson and Kitty Neale.

When Captain Merridene dies in 1828, he has little to leave his two daughters, Martha and Penelope, and in his will commends them into the care of their cousin Edward (who resembles a rabbit) of Poolerby Hall. However, the sisters are not entirely penniless, with about two hundred pounds from their father and a small annuity from their mother, so they reject Edward’s kind offer of a home with him and his wife, Rosemary. He assures them they will not be a financial burden as he will be able to then dispense with the housekeeper and not have to hire a governess.Martha has thought for a couple of years about what she and Penelope could do, and decided on starting a school for young ladies, hoping at the same time that there would be some eligible gentlemen around for Penelope. Surprisingly, it is Edward who comes to them with a solution, although he insists on taking them to meet the parties involved.
Living in a Lancashire mill town is vastly different from the life they had been living, but although they are of gentle birth, they had both been used to working in the house as well as acquiring the refinements expected of ladies of their station. Shortly after their arrival, Penelope is caught up in a riot, and together with mill engineer Daniel Porter, they hide out in the sisters’ empty house just in time. There are other plots being hatched and the story held my interest to the end, although the outcome is predictable. After all, it is an HR.
There is no sparkling dialogue but the author has a good turn of phrase and I found myself looking out for little gems as I read. There are also evocative descriptions that captured my attention. The writing and editing are reasonable, and I found the story easy to read. I did notice the odd typo and two places where the wrong character’s name is used, but didn’t really keep a lookout for errors. While I thoroughly enjoyed the first few chapters, I feel the rest of the book doesn’t quite live up to the initial promise. This is sad as I thought I had found a new Regency author, and judging from the five-star reviews her many books have, it seems she is very popular.

Marrying Miss Martha edition by Anna Jacobs Romance eBooks Reviews
Enjoyed it
I love Romantic History Books.
I usually enjoy books set in this era, and 'Marrying Miss Martha' didn't disappoint. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
Anna Jacobs holds your attention by creating suspense in days of hard times in a small town. It follows two sisters forced to make their own living when their father died, yet women who worked were frowned upon. The reader will enjoy their the journey.
I didn't think this was a well written book. The character development was poor like I had started in the middle of the book and did not have the characters background. I actually skipped pages at the end, just simply lost interest. Would probably not buy this author again.
fast read and interesting characters in a historical period and setting in England;
which gives one the opportunity to learn of the hardships, attitudes and customs
of that time and place...
Nicely portrayed description of two sisters and their attempt to settle in a small mill town, working as tutors to a family of children, also to another only-child 17 years of age, as well as holding reading classes for some of the mill workers. Both sisters are reasonable, good decision-makers, devoted to each other, and yearning for a way to maintain their life supporting themselves doing something worthwhile. Of course, there are a romantic relationships, yet the author makes a concentrated effort to deliver more than a quick read romance. Some description of mill town life, and the geographic area of the moors. And not a mention of the "ton", which I found refreshing. If you enjoy the mill town setting, I recommend an excellent, more serious novel with a love story set in Yorkshire in 1840s, " North and South" by Elizabeth Gaskell. That is a serious read, wonderful---, or you could watch the DVD, which is actually(gasp) better than the book (but make sure you get the E. Gaskell DVD and not a similar ly titled DVD about the US civil war)North and South (BBC)N & S is also available via Prime Instant Video.
